I happen to know a little history of the begining of the original course. It was designed by a guy who essentialy did not play the sport. He was some engineer/math/handyman dude that the parks hired to design it. I actually met the guy last year. I complimented him on how his design has stood the test of time vs. new disc technology and a wider spectrum of talent. The course used to only be 9 holes for some time in the 80's, until the other 9 were installed a few years later.

I helped put in the first 9 holes. Wow that's a long time ago. We first tried to get the course in Searls park.

i drove through searls a few weeks back with another disc golf buddy and all we saw was great shots on gentle hills. maybe in a few years we can make that a reality for a weekend...

According to the man who used to run the Rockford Open before there was a GRABM, 9 holes were installed around 1985. 9 more holes were added in 1988 or 1989. Rail road ties were at the front of the tee pads with just dirt or grass behind. GRABM was originated in 1990 and within 2 years we boxed in ag lime tees within rail road ties donated by Jack Bull. All work was done by club members. They remained until GRABM and the Park District joined efforts and funded the concrete tee pads in the mid 1990's (can't remember the exact year). A couple of years later the alternate pin placements were added to create the east course as we know it. All work was done by GRABM club members, except the guy who helped with the auger to dig the holes for the alternates. The history of the west course all happened while I was "away", so Carl would be the man to fill in those blanks.

I really don't know to much about when or how the course was built. The one thing that I do know is the my friend Scott Franke's father Todd Franke helped put in the east side. I know that Todd was pro for many years. That's about all I know, I'm sure that you either know Scott or would recognize him since he is at the course probably more often then anyone these days.
